Governors Ball | 06.06.14 - 06.08.14 | Randall’s Island, NY
I have always wanted to volunteer for a music festival, and since I was more interested in hanging out with my friends than anyone in this year’s lineup, I decided to save $250 and offer my services to Gov Ball.
Ever wonder what the life of a volunteer is like? I got placed into a two hour shift on Friday, and a four hour shift on both Saturday and Sunday. This meant that I would still be able to catch 1975, Washed Out, Julian Casablancas + the Voidz, La Roux, Phoenix, Outkast, Broken Bells, The Naked and Famous, The Strokes, Jack White, Skrillex, The Head and the Heart, Foster the People, Interpol, and Axwell /\ Ingrosso — none of which I cared enough about to take a picture of.
It was cool working artist hospitality and hanging backstage with the musicians that we were instructed not to speak to unless spoken to. Out of respect, I will take Outkast’s demands to my grave. I refilled people’s water bottles on Saturday and Sunday. I saw a lot of familiar faces, friends and coworkers. And then actually got the opportunity to meet some new people that I had only previously known on tumblr — like ovariesofaking and vada-sultenfuss.
I was kind of bummed that when I requested a small volunteer shirt that they said that they were only for the girls, and while I was doing artist hospitality they made the men carry the ice and the girls wash the dishes. How sexist! I didn’t even like my shirt, and wound up giving the size medium away, to a girl. One of the volunteers that I met, I saw again next weekend working at Bonnaroo.
The only thing that I regret is taking acid and missing Sleigh Bells. I really wanted to see Sleigh Bells. But I was having this wild trip that one of my friends had died and we found her body in the trash and her boyfriend was furious, and somehow it may have been my fault. Thankfully, none of that happened and she is still alive.
