I do not read the books, therefore I do not appreciate the grandeur of these films. Yet over the years, I have put time and money into watching the first six movies.
6 > 2 > 3 > 1 > 4 > 5
I had been losing interest in the film franchise, especially after each subsequent movie was getting worse and worse, that is until I enjoyed the sixth installment.
So here I am, watching the missing link between my favourite movie in the franchise, and the final chapter. Let me get on with this review all ready.
It did not strike me until now how campy this whole Harry Potter universe is. It isn’t cool magic like Dungeons and Dragons or something, but it’s literally wands, broomsticks, and chicks in witch hats. I just can not be excited to see that.
And now that I’m older, and I’ve grown up with Harry, Hermione, and Ron, I expect them to be at my level of maturity. But no. I’m aging faster than them. They are still seventeen year old fucking children, even though their actors are my age.
So now I watch a movie about adolescents acting like children. “Ooh, you’re just jealous I have parents you little orphan you Harry Potter.” “Ooh, this locket is telling me that my girlfriend and Mom both like Harry Potter more than me.” “Ooh, you disappear for weeks and you come back and say hello.”
I just can’t enjoy watching such brats. It’s just like when I could not appreciate that children’s movie Where the Wild Things Are. The main character was so unrelatable. We’re just in different places in our lives.
The whole film itself was boring, and it was not self contained. I understand that this is an entry into a franchise, but it can not stand on its own.
But I will give credit where its due. I did enjoy the climax. When Bellatrix was torturing Hermione, and Hermione was screaming. That was … different. I had never heard Emma Watson scream like that. If Emma Watson was not in this movie, I would have no desire to watch it. Actually. Emma Watson is in this movie, and I still have no desire to watch it.
So as lackluster as this film franchise has become, if you enjoy it, kudos to you. I will be there right with you watching the conclusion.★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆
